Quick Travel Workout

By Courtney Fisher

Wether traveling for work or pleasure, it can be difficult to find space in your carry-on bag for bulky sneakers and workout attire. Travel can provide some much needed rest from your normal workout, but long absences could harm your overall fitness goals. Life is full of opportunities and occasions that take us out of routine, and away from the gym. That doesn’t mean it should take us away from our quest to maintain a healthy lifestyle. You’ve worked hard to structure your exercise routine, so don’t let upsets in your schedule knock you off course.

Although she resides in Washington D.C., fitness model Kelley Vargo spends a significant amount of time traveling. She is a National Strength & Conditioning Association Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, an ACE health coach and holds a Master Degree in exercise science. “To combat the chaos of change, I like to plan ahead my exercise routine before getting on the plane. I survey the hotel and its surrounding area.” Says Vargo. “As a fitness professional, I make time for a workout regardless of my whereabouts.”

The following workout routine can be done in the comfort of your hotel room, no sneakers required!

  • Warm up:

1 minute Jumping Jacks

DO AS MANY ROUNDS AS YOU CAN IN 20 MINUTES

Move quickly between exercises, rest when you need to, continue when you’re ready!

  • 25 Squat Jumps (Take out the jump if it hurts your knees)
  • 15 (each leg) Step Ups (using a chair, bench or bed)
  • 1 minute Wall Squat (Get to parallel)
  • 30 seconds Standing Alternating Toe Touches
  • 10 Push-ups (Go to your knees when form suffers)
  • 10 Hip Raises
  • 60 second plank (Drop to your knees when your form breaks.)

Do a variation of this workout each day you’re cooped up in a hotel-room. To avoid boredom try mixing up the order of the exercises, maybe start from the bottom of the list and work your way up. Remember, all activity counts! Talk to the front desk staff about safe walking routes, take the stairs to your room instead of the elevator, make clean food choices, and avoid the temptation to rack up calories from the mini-bar.
