Get Fit with Group Exercise

By Chelsea Gayden

Fitness isn’t just about looking good. Feeling good is equally important. If you find working out solo uninspiring, you are not alone. Fortunately, group fitness offers the energy and motivation you may be looking for.

There is an unlimited number of fitness classes offered. Below are just a few of the most popular classes available in many locations.

Boot Camp
A boot camp class is more than a trainer telling you to drop down and give them twenty. It combines both cardio and muscle toning for an intense workout.

“The power of peer motivation is really prevalent in group exercise,” said Amanda Ebner, an Aerobics and Fitness Association of America certified group fitness instructor. Boot camp provides a calorie-blasting workout with a group environment that keeps you motivated.

A few popular types of yoga include Hatha, Ashtanga, Bikram and Kundalini. Hatha yoga classes use a collection of basic poses to offer a sense of balance to the mind and body. For those looking for something a lot more demanding, Ashtanga yoga (power yoga) classes build strength and endurance by quickly moving through poses. In a Bikram yoga (hot yoga) class, you will find yourself in a 105 degree room repeatedly performing a series of 26 basic yoga poses to work the entire body. Kundalini yoga classes use poses along with breathing, chanting, and mediation to draw the energy from the base of the spine upward. These types of yoga are only a few of the styles offered. For anyone looking to improve their mental, physical, and even spiritual health, yoga classes are an excellent experience.

Of Ebner’s classes, she says her most successful one is definitely spin. Spinning or cycling classes are offered in various styles. You are guaranteed to find a class that offers your desired intensity and environment. Find one near you to build strength and endurance while burning calories.

Zumba classes are a popular favorite for those of all fitness levels. The dance fitness class will have you breaking a sweat with a smile. If you enjoy hip hop, salsa, belly dancing, and various other dance styles, you will love the high energy Zumba classes. Zumba classes offer different music and dances moves to keep you moving with the group, so it makes exercise more fun.

“I find that people tend to work even harder in group classes than in personal training situations because they are spurred on by the music, the group environment, and the overall energy,” said Ebner. People not only work harder, but they have a good time doing it. If you’re looking for an enjoyable workout and a way to meet new people, try out a group fitness class near you.
