Deadly Diet Pills

Today in our society everybody is looking for a quick fix. Many people are not willing to put in the work and time to get the body they want, so they think that turning to diet pills is the solution. Many of these pill companies promise that you will lose ten pounds in one week or drop a pant size in two days. Although these promises can be very appealing, they are completely unrealistic. It took you more than a few days to put on the weight so people need to know that they are not going to get rid of it all in a few days. Unfortunately a friend of mine fell into a desperate trap of buying diet pills and I want to share her incredibly scary story.

Having put on 10 pounds to her athletic frame, my friend, who I will call Susie, decided to turn to diet pills. Knowing her eating habits were not the best they could have been in the last few months, she thought that using diet pills would help with her struggle. Susie decided to take a supplement one day after work to get a boost for her nightly run. Right after she consumed them she instantly felt dizzy and nauseated. She called me on the phone and described the feeling as “like she got drugged.” I don’t know about you, but this is INCREDIBLY scary to me. I rushed over to her house to see that she was not OK. Her heart rate had skyrocketed and all she wanted to do was walk around to take her mind off of this terrible experience she was having. She was incredibly dehydrated due to the pills she consumed and had to drink a large amount of water in order to not feel dizzy. Susie ended up getting a long night of sleep and recovered from this terrible reaction and promised to never experiment with diet pills again.

After this occurred to my friend I was incredibly shocked. I have never experimented with diet pills but I never knew that the body could react in such a scary way. I decided to do some research and the results I found were astonishing. The FDA does not regulate many of the diet pills on the market because they are unsafe. Consumer Reports states, “Dietary supplements spiked with prescription drugs are the largest threat to consumer safety. Since 2008 there have been recalls of more than 400 such products.” This means that people were trying products that were so unsafe that they had to be taken off the shelves. That is incredibly scary and everybody needs to know that just because they sell it in a store does not mean that it is safe.

There is a common guideline when it comes to weight loss that I feel everybody should remember: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. We all know that losing weight is tough, but turning to scary diet pills is absolutely not the solution, and it can turn into a deadly solution at that. There were reports gathered from FDA companies, consumers, health-care providers, and other places between 2007 and April of 2012 that reveal just how harmful supplements and diet pills can be for you. Between those years there have been more than 10,300 serious outcomes including 115 deaths, more than 2,100 hospitalizations, 1,000 serious injuries or illnesses, 900 emergency-room visits, and some 4,000 other important medical events.

I know all of you are probably smart enough to not turn towards a dangerous route; I wanted everybody to know just how terrible and deadly supplements can be. You should always talk to your doctor about what you are taking because certain medications do not react well with others. I hope everybody can learn from this story because it was surely an eye-opening experience to me.
