Staying Healthy While in the Caribbean

After a long flight including a two-hour layover, I landed in beautiful St. Maarten. The clear water spritzed my face while the sunshine warmed my skin on the twenty-minute boat ride from St. Maarten to Anguilla. I felt healthier just breathing the fresh sea salt in the air.

When I arrived at The Viceroy, the luxurious atmosphere blew me away and the most impressive was the resort’s attention to fitness, wellness and spa services. With a facility housing a rock-climbing wall, basketball courts, a fitness center and a yoga room, I didn’t know where to begin.

“The primary options include scuba diving, snorkeling, stand-up paddle boarding, kite boarding, kayaking, sailing, fishing and cycling. Viceroy has specialty items such as a professional rock-climbing arena, tennis complex and pro-shop, volleyball, both beach and astro turf, badminton and beach soccer, personal trainers and private yoga instruction as well as public pool classes,” Executive Director of Spa, Recreation & Wellness, David Erlich explained to me. “We make it easy for adults and kids to stay active and keep up with their exercise routines, while they are staying with us.”

Staying active is one thing, but eating healthy is a whole other beast to conquer and eating healthily while on vacation is a matter of tasting the amazing local flavors. Erlich explains, “the island country bears tropical delights with mango, papaya and coconut all locally grown. Smoothies and breakfast shakes are always popular with protein powders for a good post Caribbean workout. The fresh seafood options are also plentiful. Sea bass, snapper and mahi-mahi are all caught locally inter-island.  And don’t forget to share a plate with Caribbean crayfish!”

It really is simple to stay fit while staying in the Caribbean because of the activities available and the delicious health food options! Lying in the sun only lasts so long and fresh foods always provide more energy to enjoy the vacation. Here are a few easy ways to stay healthy while vacationing in the tropics:

  1. Play. Have fun trying out new activities that your resort or island has to offer. Take the time as an opportunity to play with new forms of exercise.
  2. Eat. Take pleasure in the island flavors. Enjoy your food without completely overindulging into a state of discomfort.
  3. Hydrate. The islands have fresh coconut water that is packed with nutrients to hydrate the body. Water is plentiful; just remember to drink a glass with every cocktail!

Try these helpful tips on your vacation. The islands are plentiful in majestic views, so take advantage and get out and be a part of it. There is no better way to enjoy the Caribbean than to hop out of the beach chair and discover new ways of life.
