The weather will only improve for the next few months and the sun and sand are calling our names. Not only can you work on your tan, you can work your muscles in new ways. Running on the beach has alternative benefits from running on a harder surface.

  1. It burns more calories: Your body burns more calories while running on uneven surfaces to keep stabilized. According to a study from The Journal of Experimental Biology, running on soft sand burns one and a half times more energy than running on a road or hard surface.
  2. There is a lower risk of impact injury: Many studies show that barefoot running automatically conditions the foot to hit the surface correctly because the arch of the foot takes the majority of the impact as it is designed. Running shoes cushion the arch, which weakens muscles and tendons, and exposes our bodies to injuries.
  3. Because you’re on the beach! It’s summer! You should enjoy every second you aren’t working or interning. If you don’t normally live near the beach, soak up every ray possible. BUT, if you must be working out while in the sunshine, why not do it on the beach? Show off those sexy legs!
