Taking a road trip this summer with friends and not sure how to keep your weight in check while having a good time? Here are a few simple ways to maintain your weight and maybe even lose some pounds, all while enjoying the freedom of the road.

1. Get enough sleep. Whether you are in a camper, tent or hotel, it is imperative to get enough sleep to keep your metabolism regular. We tend to consume more calories when we are tired.

2. Eat a protein packed breakfast. Registered Dietitian, Elizabeth Ward, suggests eating meals consisting of approximately 550 calories. For healthy road-breakfast options, try an Egg McMuffin and a small orange juice; Burger King French toast sticks (five pieces) and a carton of fat-free milk; or a single-serving of Cheerios, low-fat milk, banana and a hard-boiled egg from the convenient store.

3. Stick to fruit and mixed nuts at road stands and farmers markets to snack on in the car. Ward suggests two snacks per day consisting of no more than 250 calories each as a perfect caloric balance.

4  Plan activities that get your blood such as hiking or white water rafting. Any activity that challenges your body is a great way to burn calories and see the sights.

5. Try a quick roadside workout every time you stop for gas. Exercise Specialist, Kiersten Mooney, explains, “during a modified push up you work the upper fibers of your pectorals, triceps and anterior deltoids. To work your core without the capability of lying on your back, it’s best to hold a plank.”

Try these moves at each stop:

-push-ups with hands on the hood of car (15 Reps)

– tricep dips off the bumper (15 Reps)

-walking lunges (30 reps)

-plank with hands on bumper (hold for 30 seconds)

-jump rope for 2 minutes

6. Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate. Although it may seem like you don’t need a lot of water while on the road, you still need to keep your body hydrated throughout the day.
