This summer, opt out of your typical gym workout and try something more adventurous. Each year outdoor sports are becoming more popular and wherever you live there is something to do. These sports are a fun way to burn calories and get outdoors.

  1. Kayaking

Kayaking is perfect for anybody. Whether you are looking for recreational use on a peaceful river or an intense workout on white water rapids, there is something for everyone.  Mary DeRiemer, from DeRiemer Adventure Kayaking, says, “It’s fun exercise, it’s challenging, it gets one outside. There is an amazing social bond that occurs with others on the river.” DeRiemer also noted that kayaking doesn’t just work your upper body but your core and lower body too!

  1. Rock Climbing

Rock climbing is a fun and challenging sport that everyone should try at least once. Nothing else compares to the thrill you get after climbing a giant cliff and looking out into the horizon. Climbing uses every part of your body, upper body, legs, and your core, creating the ultimate workout.

  1. Mountain Biking

Mountain biking has grown in popularity lately with more people getting involved and learning about the thrill seeking sport. While descending down the mountain you experience speeds you won’t normally get on a bike. Stacy Karacostas, from Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance, says, “Biking is always a workout. But with mountain biking you’re often climbing up and down hills and negotiating obstacles like sand, stream crossings, fallen logs and rocks. That, combined with the core strength required to navigate a path the width of a hiking trail provides a tremendous full-body and cardio workout.” Karacostas recommends that beginners take a class or have someone more experienced take them out to learn the basic skills first.

  1. Kite Boarding

Kite boarding or kite surfing is the latest trend in extreme water sports. Kite boarding is a combination of other water sports including paragliding, wakeboarding and windsurfing. It is a high adrenaline sport where you get lifted into the air by the wind above the water and perform tricks.  Kite boarding works the muscles all over your body. You are using your arms to hold the kite and perform stunts, your core to stay upright, and your legs to stand on the board. This is a killer workout and a fun extreme sport to try, especially when you’re on vacation at the beach!

With all of these outdoor sports it is important to keep a few things in mind. Before you begin, make sure you become educated on the sport or go out with an instructor. Never do any of these activities alone and always have a partner or a group with you.  Be aware of your surroundings. While being outside this summer, drinks lot of water to stay hydrated and, most importantly, have fun!
