GFGL FOOD BLOG: The Power of Protein

Since beginning the Dukan diet, I’ve seen great results and as the diet does, I think it’s important to talk a bit about the importance of protein in your diet.

“Protein is a vital part of every tissue, cell and organ in your body. Protein is in a constant process of being broken down and replaced by the essential amino acids in your diet.” (found in an article by Livestrong)

Some people don’t realize that protein can be found in other foods besides straight meat. For example, milk and other dairy products contain protein ( which is why it’s a good idea to drink a glass of chocolate milk post-workout). You may have heard before that protein is made up of amino acids, which repair tears in muscle tissue in order to promote growth. Whether you’re trying to gain tons of muscle or even just to tone up here and there, it’s vital that you include protein in your diet.

Aside from muscle growth, protein also lasts much longer in your system, keeping hunger at bay so your calorie consumption decreases. In an article in Women’s Health, they mentioned that “up to a third of women between the ages of 20 and 40 don’t get their RDA of protein, according to the most recent data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture”.

EAT MORE PROTEIN PEOPLE!

According to Georgetown University, protein makes up to 45 percent of the human body. That’s a hell of a lot if you ask me, and definitely makes me stop and think that it may be important to concentrate on protein-rich foods. What’s hard about protein is that it is found in meats and fish and other things that aren’t really “grab and go” options and if they are, they aren’t always the healthiest ones. But by making small changes in your diet, like trying to consume more egg whites, or if you’re a bacon fan, switch over to turkey bacon. It’s delicious. Also, I like to buy the 98 percent fat free hot dogs that are also low in fat and packed with protein. It’s about the little things because those are what add up into the bigger things. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want that “bigger thing” to be my behind.
