Getting in Shape for Spring Break in a Safe and Healthy Way

By: JORDAN HUGHES

Spring break is right around the corner and this means that everyone is working hard to prep their bodies for a week of frolicking on the beach in a bikini. The stress of getting in shape before a big trip like spring break can be extremely taxing on one’s body.

It seems that students across campuses everywhere are turning to workout tapes like P90X and Insanity to get their bodies in the best shape. These tapes are popular for a number of reasons.

According to the P90X website, the workout program is extremely effective because the training is intense and only works when combined with a healthy diet. There are no quick and easy ways to lose weight; the only way to succeed with these tapes is through hard work.

University of Illinois student, Natalie Mares, is one of the many girls on campus who is prepping hard for a spring break trip to South Padre Island, Texas. Mares commented on the effectiveness of the program for her.

“My roommates and I have been doing P90X consistently and I think they are very effective,” says Mares. “I do not feel silly or shy about working out because I can do the workouts in the privacy of my own home.”

Mares also commented on the campus-wide frenzy to get in shape for spring break.

“A lot of people are starting to go on diets and work out more frequently for spring break,” says Mares. “I work at the gym and we always notice a significant increase in people coming to the gym about three weeks before break. We call it the spring break rush.”

Crash diets and fasts are commonplace, but these diets prove ineffective and useless in the long run.

University of Illinois student Michelle Ouska also commented on the prevalence of dieting on campus prior to spring break.

“I think the best way to get in shape for spring break is to plan early,” says Ouska. “You can’t lose weight or change your body overnight is a safe, effective way.”
As stated earlier, it is impossible to change the way you look in a short amount of time without hurting your body.

“It’s best to be mindful about physical activity/nutrition/alcohol consumption/etc well before the “deadline” and create small goals along the way,” Ouska said.

Realistically, people dieting for spring break should be losing a maximum of one to three pounds per week.

Registered dietician Katherine Tallmadge told Web MD “You can safely lose 3 or more pounds a week at home with a healthy diet and lots of exercise.”

Having a goal in mind, like Spring Break, can be a great motivator for a workout. The thing to remember is not to do anything unhealthy to lose weight before a big event.

Monica Dorgan, also a University of Illinois student, says she can already notice changes in her body from doing P90X and working out consistently.

“We have been doing P90X consistently and I can already notice some changes in my abs and legs,” Dorgan said. “I think these videos are a simple way to get in shape because we can do them at home and they really work.”

For those of you looking to lose some weight before spring break, the conclusion is simple: eat healthy and work out regularly. Turning to tapes like P90X and Insanity can be a convenient and effective way to get in shape safely.
