Late Afternoon Hunger Cures

New Yearʼs resolutions are here and so many of us have made the commitment to be healthy, lose weight and clean up our diets. We wake up in the morning with great intentions, eat a nutritious breakfast and pack a healthy lunch. Then all of a sudden the 3-4 p.m. stress munchies hit. We all know the importance of that late day snack to give us a little energy and prevent us from binging at dinner, but what are the best choices? Vicki Vara, owner of the v.method and professional fitness trainer and nutrition coach, came up with a few go-to snacks that are easy to keep on hand, in your car, desk, or pantry. Whether you are a chocolate, salt, or crunch craver, these healthy foods will satisfy you and give you the energy boost you need without packing on the pounds.
Homemade trail mix
Mix together natural almonds, sunflower seeds, raisins, and a few dark chocolate chips. Place them in a resealable bag or reusable jar to keep handy. Measure out a serving and put the rest very far away.

A 200-calorie serving of the trail mix:

  • 1/2 cup or 5 almonds
  • 1 tbsp. of sunflower seeds
  • 3 tbsp. of raisins
  • 1 tbsp. of dark chocolate chips

Kale chips
This super food is quite trendy right now and is popping up everywhere. When baked or dehydrated, kale makes quite an excellent chip and is perfect for those who are craving salty and crunchy treats. These chips can be made at home by placing washed kale on a baking sheet with olive oil and sea salt and baking at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes. If youʼre not up for baking, you can purchase them in most health food stores.
Almond butter and all natural crackers
Almond butter is much more nutritionally sound than peanut butter and can be found almost anywhere. A tablespoon of almond butter and 10 crackers will provide you with 200 calories of delicious energy. Maryʼs Gone Crackers is a great brand for all natural snack crackers.
